Actually, I'm not.
But, you know, I've only lived here my entire life. What do I know?

I'm not sure if you care about this stuff, but I'd say that Boise is a very tolerant place. I don't know if that's just the libertarian, non-confrontational side of the Idaho ethos, or if we really are a tolerant crowd, but it seems to be so. We have a great diversity program and group of events at BSU, the city is looking and feeling more and more diverse every month, and there are substantial gay pride parades and rallies with enormous turnouts.
I think that, better than most places, the religious and conservative get along well with the secular and progressive, at least on the surface. That said, the former control the politics far more than the latter. I think 08 will be the turning point, however, at least in Ada County. We seem to be one of two Democratic havens (the other being Sun Valley) - and last year's race was pretty close.
You'd be amazed at how much local politics is really controlled by property rights and land-use issues, though. This seems to be one of the primary forces in Idaho politics, and for good reason.

I find it hard to believe that you are an expert on everyones opinion that lives in this area.

My husband has lived here his entire life also and does not think like you. So now we have to Idahoans that think differently. Were are conservative to a point too.

Last i checked there is one religious billboard on I-84, it doesn't bother anyone. When i go to San Fran i see people holloring about religion in the streets and actually causing a disturbence. California has a higher church going rate than idaho
I like most people that i know in Boise have a libertarian attitude to gays, religion etc, let them do what they want, live and let live, it doesn't hurt you, i know plenty of gays and they don't seem to have any problem with Boise, There is a gay pride march every year, not an intolerance march like Couer d'Lane has has in past years (not since the Aryan Nations moved to Pennsylvania however) and there are plenty of gay bars
Nearly all of the state congressman from Boise are democrat, our mayor is a democrat, i pretty sure all but one of our councilmen are democrats. in the last state-wide election, boise voted for a democratic govenor, school super, Lt. gov. attorney general etc. Boise has two federal districts, where again both of the democratic candidates got a strong majority of the vote, not strong enough to compete with the rest of the state,

By the way the cross on Table Rock is nice to see over looking the city, the only people who have complained about it are athiest groups from out of state. Isn't it funny how atheists, agnostics, and secular-humanists are more intolerant than religious types

That's not entirely true - there's been a lot of community opposition to the Table Rock cross, especially at BSU between 2001-2003.
But I do agree, it's not a big deal to me either. I suppose its how people read the situation - some think its a religion pushing their views upon them, others see it as a symbol and are able to ignore it. I've kinda been that way about everything.
I wouldn't care if it was a lit statue of Krishna up there, but I can guarantee you that the uproar would be tremendous if it were that instead of a cross. THAT'S my only point of opposition with the cross.

The Table Rock Cross is great. I was not living in Boise when there was a march to the cross in support, but I heard that over 10,000 people marched up Table Rock to show support. It is kind of like a beacon of hope shining over the city at night.
Miborn mentioned a strong anti gay sentiment in Boise? There has been a rage over the senator, but guess what? ..there has also been much vocalized support for him from leaders and regular Boiseans as well.
Boise isn't a bastian of gay life, but there are a lot of gay and lesbian citizens in Boise and more move here all of the time because it is a great smaller city to live in peace around accepting people, and of course there are always the bad apples. There are probably 4 or 5 gay clubs/bars downtown, and one of the most popular clubs in the city is...OMG... a gay bar, the Balcony Club, which many straight people frequent too and all get along great. If there are forumers here stating Boise is anti gay, they (the forumers) are lost and/or anti gay themselves IMO. Sorry, but that is how I feel. Boise is pretty open, you can see lesbian couples holding hands and even gay couples holding hands as they walk around...and nobody cares or harrases them!
When I first moved here the joke I always heard is that Boise should be nicknamed Bi-Boise because there are supposedly many bisexuals here.
Just a tidbit of info

Yeah, pretty much.
It's kinda awesome that Beacon St. drives directly toward the cross. It's also sorta neat to think about the drive to Table Rock is a popular back-seat session grounds for teenagers.
Oh the sinful irony...
