The loss of the Minneapolis Delta (really Northwest) hub has hurt Boise a lot for traveling back east. There used to be many route options that connected through Minneapolis to get to cities back east. For the most part, those are now all gone.

As for Frontier, they put Boise service on indefinite hiatus:

What about Spokane? Does it offer better/cheaper/more options than Boise for flights?

Yes and no. It can get you to Seattle pretty easily, but if you are going east you are adding unneeded time. Plus the travel to Spokane can cost an arm and a leg alone.

Boise has more non-stop destinations compared to Spokane, so you could say Boise has "better service." But Spokane has more passengers. From Spokane you can only get to two California airports nonstop, both in the Bay Area (San Francisco, Oakland). From Boise you have five (San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and LA). Don't know about fare comparisons.

Even with the cuts, Boise has decent air service compared to other cities its size. But the costs are definitely up, a holiday air fare to Boise cost me nearly as much as two round trips to NYC from LAX. It seemed in the past airfares from SoCal to Boise were typically 200-300 r/t. They tend to be 300-400 r/t now.

Any updates on travel in and out of Boise? My husband and I are relocating from Denver in the fall and I'm wondering if there will be an increase in accessibility in the future. We are used to direct flights to almost anywhere. I read something about a grant that will add a nonstop flight to the east coast. Any insights would be great!

A good number of new flights/routes have been added the past year and more coming soon. The news is much better than it was 2 years ago when there were cuts.
The best place for this info is the airport website.

Default Additional SoCal Non-Stop Flight:

Boi2socal,

After many flights out of Ontario, CA to Boise (via stops in either Portland or Seattle on Alaska Airlines ) we discovered that San Diego has a reasonable two hour and ten minute direct flight. We usually pay about $109 each way and love the flight!

We are currently building our retirement home in Eagle and must travel up ever so often to inspect and meet with the builder and design coordinators.

For some reason lately though the car rental rates in Boise have climbed dramatically. Otherwise it's a great deal and a real time/hassle saver.

Best regards,

JR

What airline is this? I have yet to find a non stop flight from San Diego to Boise... Especially for that price.

It's nice to be two hours away from San Diego.
