To hunt deer or elk in Idaho is there a caliber restriction? The purpose of my question is that I'm new to Idaho and want to hunt coyotes, with maybe a .223 or .243. I'm wondering if these would be too light a load for big game in Idaho....don't want to break any laws too.

.243 is a common caliber for deer hunting but too small for elk. Not sure on .223, but my feeling would be that it's too light for deer.

.223 will kill a whitetail just fine. I've killed more than deer with a .223, but that was while I was serving our country

Anything bigger, you'll want a higher caliber such as .308 or maybe a .300 or 7mm. I prefer a .300 Winchester round as an all around hunting round and it will take down anything alive in Idaho.

I'm a fan of the .270. Kind of between a .243 and .308, good enough for Deer and Elk and flat enough for Coyotes.

I almost got to try it out of wolf this year.
