Hi!

My DH and I are retired and have been thinking of relocating to Idaho for some time. We have been looking at Emmett, New Plymouth and Payette in the southern part of the state since they don't get as much snow. Currently we are just north of San Diego but the traffic, congestion, prices, taxes, gangs, crime, cost of living, and the way the state just keeps going downhill due to the political situation is finally driving us into action to seek a state to live in that shares our values and is more affordable. I don't know how long it will take us to sell our home but I would really appreciate any insight from those of you who have relocated from CA. We will not be bringing the progressive/liberal values of CA but rather plan to fit in with Idaho residents.

One of our biggest concerns is medical care. We are both healthy but we are aging and worry that with obamacare it will be difficult to find a new doctor without having to drive to a major city. I have read that Emmett is pretty much self-contained except for major medical issues. We wonder if the local doctors will accept new patients with Medicare Advantage and was it difficult finding a doctor to accept you. New Plymouth and Payette are not far from Ontario. Where do people in these two towns go for medical care?

As far as shopping, I read that Emmett meets basic needs and people seem to go to Boise periodically for the big box stores or other shopping. New Plymouth and Payette it seems that people drive to Ontario. We are not concerned about restaurants. We know little about New Plymouth or Payette.

We are a quiet couple who enjoy the outdoors, walking with our dogs. My hubby flies radio-controlled helicopters and airplanes, and I spend my time with art. I am a retired special ed teacher and would be interested in volunteering at a local school.

We plan to visit Idaho the end of March in our RV. We have not driven in snow and wonder if a trip at that time is advisable. I know that living where it snows will be an adjustment but being retired we will not have to do a lot of driving in it.

We have been looking at homes on the internet in the Cherry Lane, Plum Rd. area of Emmett. Is that a good area for a retired couple? We would like an acre but not be too far out of town. Also, what are the real estate taxes in those towns?

We would really appreciate it if someone would share the specific cost of utilities. Utilities and water here in CA are getting to be too expensive for us.

In the meantime, we keep researching and reading all we can but sure would appreciate all and any insights from those of you who live in Idaho.

Thanks so much!

Because Emmett in the greater Boise area, I think you'll get a better response in the Boise Area subforum so I moved it there.

Thanks! I didn't realize north and south were separate sites.

Well...not completely separate...but since the Boise Area has its own subforum, you're likely to get a better response here as a "fringe area" of the Boise metro area I would think...
