Also, usually plenty of young guys willing to install your chains for a price over I-80. They swarm the summit during these periods. Usually worth the price. But then you have to take them off! I can do it, but it isn't worth the extra time and cold for me. Kinda like changing a flat...you can do it, but the pros can do it much faster and more effieciently.
They have guys that will take them off as well.

95 to 80 and then west over Donner Pass. Weather could be dicey that time of year so be prepared and stay flexible with your travel plans. Chains, food/water and extra blankets plus plenty of winter clothing should be in the car. I helped a college kid out a few years back when he rolled his car during a snowstorm on highway 55. It was maybe 20 degrees and storming and the warmest thing he had with him was a sweatshirt. Just dumb.
In the winter there's not a single direction you can drive out of Boise and not expect to deal with wintery conditions at times. It's important to be prepared.
Nevada City is on Hwy 49 where it meets highway 20. It would definitely be quicker to come into CA on Hwy 80. You might see a little snow or ice around Donner Pass in December but not likely in Nevada City.
