I have gone through posts and many are older and I know things have changed in the last few years. Could someone tell me the good and bad areas of both cities? Where are the better parts of town to live? From my research it seems like I'm leaning more toward Caldwell. I read to stay away from downtown Nampa.
I'm retired, my husband is not so we don't need to be concerned about schools.
I've read posts that state some people are totally against both places. Boise, Meridian, Eagle are a bit higher priced then I'd like and Kuna just doesn't have enough in the way of shopping, etc.
I'd appreciate any ones input. Thanks

I have lived in Nampa for about 2 years now and the only thing I don't like is the active season when they do the beet sugar processing. It stinks but I keep my doors and windows shut. When I talked with the police they said to stay away from the numbered streets near downtown. Otherwise it is okay in Nampa. I can't talk about Caldwell because I haven't lived there but I heard that it WAS bad like Nampa was many years ago but that it has been cleaned up.

I love all the shopping in Nampa and I live off Cherry Blvd in Nampa and I love the neighborhood that I live in and I'm only 5 minutes to the freeway and shopping.

I've been working in Nampa and Caldwell a lot lately.
My opinion is that they are toilets.
Neither is better than the other.

When we first moved here, we rented a house in Caldwell. If you like city amenities, it may not be for you. It mattered not to me, but does to my husband. He wanted to purchase in Boise and did.

I found people in Caldwell to be very nice. I had to go to the Social Security office several times to help a family member. The wait was never more than 15 minutes, and we were treated quite respectfully.

I liked Nampa too. Downtown Nampa reminds me of the small town feel from when I was young. I think it's struggling, though. City officials seem to be trying to do something about it.

You can definitely get more bang for your buck as far as housing goes if you decide to live out there. But if you want more activities and access to what an urban center has to offer, you'll be 20 to 30 minutes away. Not too bad if you are already coming from a large, metropolitan area. People that grew up here feel differently about the distance. You'll hear, "You'll have to drive all the way out to Nampa, and that's about a 20 minute drive."

Thank you for all your help. When we lived there 30 years ago, we were in I think Garden City, Chinden, Glenwood area. Wasn't considered the nicest of areas, but we had no problems. Then I rented a house near downtown Boise. Didn't like that too much.
Right now I live in Pahrump, NV 60 miles from Las Vegas. There is nothing here but a Wal mart and a few fast foods. So for any other shopping or to eat somewhere nice we have to go at least 60 miles. So to be 30 miles from Boise wouldn't bother me in the least. At least Nampa has a nice mall and places to eat. Looks like Caldwell has enough also.
Can someone give me an example of the property taxes and home owners insurance and car insurance prices?
From what I've seen there is no personal property taxes yearly on vehicles, etc., right?
After the first of the year we are going to come out and look at houses. Seems like the nice areas of Boise and Meridian have gotten expensive. And Eagle always was high priced.
Thanks for the help.

I'm from Las Vegas. I had no idea that Pahrump had a Walmart.

I disagree that Caldwell and Nampa are toilets, but you'll find a lot of that way of thinking here. People tend to think that only Boise, Meridian, and Eagle are decent, but the entire Treasure Valley is really quite nice as far as people go. I liked Caldwell and the historic district has some beautiful homes.

When do they do the beet sugar processing? And how long does it last?

The sugar processing season generally gets underway in the second half of October and lasts until sometime in late March or early April.

This leaves me with a question of my own for current area residents. During the winter, what is the general air quality like in the Nampa-Caldwell area?

Live in Caldwell and lived in Nampa, nothing wrong except some wannabe gangbangers but they are pretty much in check since this state is a gun friendly and since July of this year(2016), we have conceal carry so these punks would end up getting shot if they tried to get away with antic thugs do like in the Peoples Republic of California. Keep in mind that there are several negative posts about Idaho in general that are products of SJW of whom some do not even live in the state and the ones who do decry how awful it is in Idaho but will not leave to one of the Socialist havens like the aforementioned PRC(where I used to live). Love the people here you have the smaller town feel with plenty of amenities. Great fishing and hunting as well. Not perfect but good to live.
