I have a friend that's been trying to get work at the local big hospitals, and has applied multiple times to the same position (at the hospital's request), but can't seem to get hired. This person is incredibly qualified, went through the local BSU program for accreditation, and has a a great personality - gets along with anyone. He's been called in on short notice to come in for interviews and skills tests, which he willingly accommodated, only to hear nothing. He will show up to a requested interview with interviewers not prepared, and having to wait more than an hour for them to show up, or having to deal with a hostile HR person that sits there like a robot asking a list of 40 questions, again being told "we'll call you early next week" and hearing nothing. HR seems to be the overlords at these places rather than the hiring managers calling the shots, which is wrong in so many ways.

So what's up with hiring at these places? I know Boise is a small town and it often times is not what you know but who you know, but if these places are advertising for this position for 6 months and they have a great candidate in front of them then what is the issue? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Seems par for the course.

I went through the same crap about 10 years ago, but not with SA or SL, but rather, a host of municipal, county, and state jobs I applied to.

My best guess is that the hiring people are overwhelmed with applicants and interviews, and competition is fierce. And people probably fall through the cracks.

Those are both huge employers, so the canned questions and systematic process are to be expected. As to why your friend isn't getting hired, who knows? Maybe he fell through the cracks, or maybe there are simply better candidates available. Those are generally pretty desirable employers so they probably have their pick of employees.
