So they tore down the Simplot Mansion on the big hill going up towards Bogus Basin. I read this was donated to the state to be the governors house but Butch Otter didn't want to live there because of his divorce from JR Simplots daughter. Then the State gave it back to the family and the family tore down the mansion and left the giant flag on the hill.

Does anyone know if this will ever be converted to something else - like maybe a Park? Is there any pubic access to this site? How do they mow the grass on that giant steep hill?

Seems like an ideal place for something in the public domain like maybe a community wedding venue or a community park? Or maybe something that would draw people to Boise? Right now it seems like a wasted asset that is doing nothing other than flying the flag ontop of a big hill.

Any info or ideas?

Definitely should be a park. What other function is there? But even as a park, I wonder what the attraction might be other than a half-hearted view. What a mistake this whole thing has become...

I've been up on top of that hill before and the view is outstanding, probably the best urban view in Idaho next to Table Rock.

Per the most recent news, the family still owns the land with no immediate plans.

In similar news, anyone know what is going on with the old Cole Elementary School ground? They tore the school down some years back and it is still just sitting vacant. I heard a rumor once that there was a deed restriction that only allowed a school to be there, or the ground would go back to the Cole family.

Not much seems to be happening here. The latest google search brings up this:

Boise Schools ready to sell Cole school property » Idaho Statesman Blogs

??? No updates on this prime piece of real estate...?

The place was as ugly as Rosemary's baby from the beginning.

Good riddance to an old man's ego at last. J.R. left a lot of good civic construction behind him as a testament to him. His home wasn't one of them.

It is a shame how they just tore down the Simplot house. Why not donate it to the Fire Dept for test burns or try to recycle some of the building materials? Nope, just tear it down and let it sit as a bare landscaped lot. It is no longer owned by the State of Idaho, so who knows what will eventually become of the property.

The Cole Elementary site was acquired by Maverick, Inc. (gas/convenience store chain) back on January 2015. At one time, Cole and Fairview was the busiest intersection in Idaho but that has now migrated west to Eagle and Fairview.

So Maverick passed on it? That is odd. Maverick has been in big expansion mode the past couple years. I love their 2 cent discount with their Maverick card...I can save up to 24 cents with a fill-up! Enough to go into the store and pay 2.00 more than a grocery store for the same products. Beautiful!
