Moving from South Florida, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, I see what government corruption can do to a mass transit system. Back in 1978 I voted for a county wide monorail system. Have not seen a trace of it yet outside of downtown Miami. We have a billion cars on the road every day, so instead of building a decent mass transit system they rigged the interstates so they can collect upwards to $10 toll per car during rush hour. I work 12.2 miles from my home and it takes me if I am lucky, a solid hour in traffic to get there. Same on the way home. That is two hours a day five times a week. And I am charged tolls for this pleasure. My Honda burns through a full gas tank every week.
So, as I look at the map of the Treasure Valley, seeing growth stretching westward along I-84 toward Nampa, and to a lessor degree into Eagle, Star and northern Meridian toward Caldwell, I wonder what the politicians and bureaucrats will do about mass transit. So far, I sometimes hear interesting ideas, but not real action. I sure hope someone decides to do some actual planning for the future. But since politicians is just a fancy name for crooks in my book, I do not have high hopes.
Our public transit system is pretty safe but you should always be aware of your surroundings. Until parking becomes more of a problem or more expensive, our public transportation system will struggle. Why walk two blocks to a bus stop and wait for a bus that takes you on a scenic route when UBER is pretty cheap and offers door to door service?
