We are moving to Idaho area due to church, and get away from wet Seattle.
I am a passionate about growing my own food and do a lot of it here..in greater Seattle area... besides my own garden , I work in couple community gardens to provide organic food for my family.... If you garden in Caldwell, Nampa, Meridian area - what do you grow? What to expect? do u have community gardens in this area? thank u!
University of Idaho has extensive web pages listing varieties that grow in the different regions of Idaho. The University of Idaho Extension office has even more web pages about soil and what varieties grow in Idaho.
University of Idaho re-forestation program sells seedlings of all sorts of trees and shrubs that grow well in Idaho, mostly natives. They are correctly grown, healthy, and cheap. If you happen to have a lot of land to be planted.
You can grow just about anything. I have about 20 different things planted right now, but range from herbs to plants with fruit (like tomatoes) and vine plants like cucumbers, zuchinni, pumpkin. I used to live in Seattle, and the growing season was short and damp most of the time and constantly had to fight leaf mold. Here, you just have to remember to water a lot, or have a drip irrigation system which is easiest and most efficient with water. The soil in the meridian suburbs has a lot of clay in it, so raised beds are a good idea so you can fill them with good topsoil and supplement with nutrients as needed.
I grow tomatoes, raspberries, grapes, apples, cherries, plums, basil, chives, onions, peppers, cilantro. I had potatoes one year, but not worth the trouble. Same for corn. There are so many farmers markets around for common staples.
Thank you SO SO much for your input!! . We are probably going to be in Caldwell, Nampa area... Anyone can recommend good Forums like this for Boise area garderners?
Last year my Santa Rosa plum tree (only in the ground 1.5 years at that point) produced over 200 delicious plums!
My bing and Rainier cherry trees produced good quality cherries, but few.
Had about 50 peaches, and they were HUGE and very sweet.
Gave up on veggies, for the amount of time and work involved I can buy them from the local farmers market. :-)
Flowers have been stunning! My iris have multiplied and do very, very well. Did lose my 3 butterfly bushes due to this years winter, as did all my neighbors.
