Maybe the good news is that since there are more people out of work in the Boise area that companies will relocate here because there is a pool of people to employ. Word is that several companies who looked at Boise in past years did not relocate here because the unemployment rate was so low that there were not many people who needed jobs, and they would have had a difficult time filling positions with good experienced people because those people all had jobs.
It is a different story now so the stars might be lining up for Boise.
With all due respect, I'm not sure about some of this analysis.

While Boise has had a moderately low unemployment rate for the past 3-4 years, I'm not sure it meant there was a shortage of workers. Jobs have always been notoriously hard to come by in Boise - every hiring cycle our company has had well over 100-200 resumes for various positions. It was the same in most non-retail, non-food service positions, at least in the various sectors I'm familiar with.

I've heard the complaint that some companies haven't felt there was enough highly or specifically educated workers in Boise, but I've always felt that's sort of loaded jargon to get government to capitulate a bit more in these companies' favor.

SilverDraft Studios, a TV production company is opening up shop in Meridian sometime in April. Looks like 100 jobs to start; this could be a very cool gig!

Possibly a precursor to Bryan's Run, another major filming studio due to open in Boise somewhere in the near future.

I have it on good word (through a few of Boise's film-makers, Chad and Celia Rinn, Greg Bayne, and Heather Rae) that Idaho Studios (aka Bryan's Run) is not opening anytime in the near future, if at all.

However, that SilverDraft Studios looks promising. I hadn't heard about that one.

I have to be honest the Bryan's Run thing sounded like a film studio version of Sweetwater Junction if anyone remembers that pipe dream. However, I really do think a sizeable film studio could work in Idaho, I just found this project a little too pie in the sky.

Oh, and the website for Bryan's Run is gone...

Well the draw was that Idaho was going to create all sorts of tax incentives for studios to film here cheaply. It's not a terrible idea, but I think we're still a little remote for most major projects. Plus, the Napoleon Dynamite buzz has long since faded.

Right now studios have better tax breaks, closer access, and similar landscapes in New Mexico and western Texas (Marfa is a trendy spot).

I do think we'll see something spring up that may prove mildly successful when the recession ends, but we'll never be the next Vancouver or anything.
