Good afternoon, I’m relocating to Boise this fall from a warmer area and curious if anyone has successfully grown lemon tree in town?

Thank you

(Yes, I googled…there are mixed thought)

I can't imagine there would any way to do it without allowing for bringing it inside in the winter.

Too cold in the winter. Snow and citrus don't seem to go together very well.

I grew a miniature orange tree long enough for it to fruit before it died.
The small oranges tasted a lot like lemons.

Citrus is extremely hard to raise here, even indoors. They're too sensitive to the cold.

I had a lemon tree in Central Oregon, which is colder than Boise. It was a dwarf tree and it lived in a large pot inside the house under grow lights. It got taken outside in the summer during the day and was brought in at night so the deer couldn't eat it.

So yes, you can have a lemon tree in Boise.

As far as one in the ground, you can maybe grow a lemon tree on the California coast, as far north as Santa Barbara, if you are careful about what site you pick for it. Outside, planted in the ground in Boise, no, unless you keep it inside a heated greenhouse.

No citrus, no avocados, no bananas in Boise. You can grow cherries and apples and pears, and possibly peaches if you are careful about the site you pick for your peach tree and you get a cold tolerant variety of peach. You can also grow walnuts and filberts. And I've been seeing maps that claim that Pawpaws will grow in Boise, and those are "tropical" flavored. I don't actually know anyone who has tried it, though, so if you grow a pawpaw, you are experimenting.

Or you could do what the Russians did.

Lemons will tolerate some low winter light in the house.

I have had a Meyer Lemon tree for the last 6 years. We are east of Seattle at 600' elevation, so it comes into the house about mid-late October, and stays there until at least May. I must say that when in blossom indoors the aroma is fantastic. I do hand pollinate the blossoms when it's inside. Generally I get 4-5 lemons a year, and it's in a 5 gallon pot, about 3' high.
