Climate for Seniors in Nampa (Boise, Caldwell: real estate, apartment complexes, rentals)

My daughter, son in law, and 2 grandchildren live in Nampa. I am 73, single for many years, and live in Virginia Beach, VA. They would like me to move to Nampa and be closer to family and do the move while I'm still in good health. The cost of living is lower in Nampa than VA Beach. Weather is a change from moderate/humidity to high desert and dry climate. I enjoy being near the ocean here, but not the humidity.

What are the activities available to a relocating senior to Nampa who is not into the bingo scene, but will use the Rec Center. (I enjoy reading, museums, bike riding, etc., like to write, good conversation). Will spend plenty of time with my family out there, but I do not plan to impose on my daughter for constant companionship.

Thanks for any ideas, thoughts on apartment complexes vs. private rentals, especially from seniors who have moved there recently. What are best parts of town in which to live.

I don't live in Boise (yet), but did live in Va Beach for over 12 years. I have also been talking to a couple dozen people who live or have lived in the Boise area...which is why I'll be there in another 2 years when I retire! Compared to Va Beach, the weather is much less humid. I've been tracking the temps and humidity in Boise for the past half year and it consistently runs much less than Va Beach ever did. The temps really aren't that different though...although spring appears to come later and autumn doesn't last as long. Overall, it sounds pretty pleasant to me.

While I've been searching for housing online, I have come across some retirement neighborhooods, usually a cluster of small individual houses, with lots of facilities for seniors. I didn't keep track of them (don't want to live in one) and couldn't give you any names or anything, but just browse through the online real estate sections and you'll find them. I recommend www.realtor.com and then check on "Advanced Search". Once you put your specifications in there (and you can select senior community as one of your desires), just start looking. Housing in Boise is a bit less expensive than Va Beach, but not that much....and the prices certainly aren't going down!

Persnally, I think a move to Boise, especially if you have family there, would be a good thing.

I'm a 57 yr old who grew up in Virginia Beach, and also spent part of my adult life there. I would not go back, it's way too overpriced now, the culture I grew up in is gone, and the summer humidity and mosquitoes are unbearable. I'd relocate to Nampa if I were you.

Sometimes I think that Nampa gets an undeserved bad reputation, as in any city there is the bad and the good....you might also check out Caldwell as it is more rural there, nice country roads and close to Nampa.

First Church of the Nazarene in Nampa has the best social programs for seniors and there are lots of cultural activities at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa. Nazarenes and Mormons "own" Nampa.
