I don't know anything about Lewiston, but winters in Boise are pretty easy. But, in the interest of full disclosure... let me start by saying that I grew up in Idaho Falls, which has a pretty nasty winter.
You can get snow from as early as Halloween, and as late as St. Patty's day, but that's pretty unusual. A typical winter only has sporadic snowfall from Thanksgiving through MLK day. It will usually snow a few inches, but then by the afternoon, the roads are just a slushy, wet mess.
In December and January you could have to worry about ice on the roads. All of the snow melts off in the afternoon, but as the sun goes down all of the water on the road turns into ice. The highway district will drop sand on the road, but it can still be slippery.
That said, while ice on the road isn't unusual, it also isn't an every day problem. You'll have ice on the road for 1, 2, or 3 days, and then it'll be gone until the next storm comes.
It's really not that bad, you just have to slow down and watch out for crazies driving 4x4's.
