Calling all Boise nurses
If you're a nurse in the Boise area, we could use your input. My wife's been looking at job postings for St. Lukes and St. Al's. Needless to say, the searches have been beyond short, as there are no jobs posted. In fact, the hospital sites have NOT CURRENTLY HIRING FOR THIS POSITION listed for all but one or two positions. She's contacted a nurse recruiter, but hasn't gotten much info there either. Help, please! Does anyone have ANY info on nursing jobs? Is there a hiring freeze? Should we be nervous? Thanks in advance.

I heard from someone who formerly worked as a nurse at St. Lukes that they are in a hiring freeze since some time last year.

Comment from that Statesman article:

THIS WHOLE STORY IS NOTHING BUT LIES!!!!!!! I know for a fact right now, today! Both hospital are cutting back on CNA's and having the nurses pick up the slack because the floors are have few customers. Many nurses/RN are getting Call Offs and are being sent home early. In fact the hospitals are not hiring RN's but for a very few, very specially trained nurses. If a nurse/RN wanted a job today, she isn't going to find one in the Valley 99 out of a 100. The big problem of this is we for the most part only have one insurance company which is the Blue Roof Mafia. That group has made it so people can not afford insurance but for major medical so people do not receive treatment unless their lives depend on it. What needs to happen is St. Al's needs to be sold out to one of the larger HMO"s so we have some free market action in this scam we have now. Keep in mind there's a big difference between a two year AA/RN and a four year BSN/RN.

Sure would be nice to know what this poster's background is.....hard to know whether to take their comments seriously, when we don't know who this person is or what capacity they work in the industry. Would be nice to hear from someone who actually works in the field to get a real viewpoint.

Thank you for the info. My husband and I are watching the classifieds and job searches for St Lukes and St Als and other hospitals. I have a AA/RN and have been working a cardiac step down unit for 3 years. It is a very diverse floor for a cardiac unit. We are the catch all for the ICU's so I have patients on vents, post heart cath, with a psych patient thrown in for good measure to make the night more interesting. There is an abundance of jobs here in Vegas but our heart is set on Boise. I am applying for my Idaho nursing license this week and will start applying soon. Hopefully the hospitals will start hiring soon or I can find a position in another facility such as a hospice. I was just astonished at the absence of job listings in the Boise area. Hopefully all will work out for us and we can move up there this summer. We look forward to getting away from the Vegas scene and move to your great city with our 8 month old. Boise is a beautiful clean city and a wonderful place to raise a family. We are very envious of your lifestyle and hope the recession and current economic status of our country doesn't cause us to postpone our plans.

While I agree that you have to take any comments on the internet with a grain of salt, why would you think that a) that poster would purposefully be misleading on a Statesman article about nursing, and b) why would that poster be any more or less reliable that anything anyone here has to say?
