Default Lightning Bugs

I know this is another silly post but I am curious. Are there lightning bugs in Boise, ID. I grew up in Indiana and we have tons and then I moved to California and they have none. Now I am moving to Boise, Id and I am just curious to know if you guys have them there.

Yes, they thrive on warmth and humidity. So they're found mostly in the Eastern US. I lived in suburban Chicago as a kid and I remember how the lightning bugs filled the air with their yellow flashes on summer evenings.

Thanks to the OP for the memories.

Glad I saw this thread. Those who miss lightning bugs can find a glowing, flying insect in the Grasslands and desiduous forests of South-Central and Southeast Idaho in late July and August. They aren't the same kind as those of the Midwest, so they're smaller and less frequent, which won't offer the same prominance looking out over a field and may require some exploration. Still, they have the same serene entertainment value in a dark campsite. In line with the notes on humidity, they're much more available after wet summers than drought summers, too, and populate near creeks and ponds as a place to search. My most prominant memories were in orchards near Hazelton where my dad grew up and around creeks near Sage Hen Reservoir.

Thanks for letting me know. I am going to miss the lightning bugs like crazy. They are just a natural part of summer for me. But Indy doesnt have mountains so I guess you give a little to get a little.

Hey...I'm from Carmel! My western-born kids only get to see lightning bugs when we go back to visit family. That's their favorite part of Symphony On The Prairie...catching lightning bugs.

Nope none here. It is one of the things I miss about living on the east coast. I used to live in the D.C. area and they were all over the place there during the summer. They definitely prefer the warm moist climates.
