What are your favorite biographies where the subject is a book or short story author (fiction or nonfiction), a poet, a newspaper reporter or a newspaper columnist? I do not like autobiographies so the book should have been written by someone other than the subject.
I'm currently beginning Edgar A. Poe by Kenneth Silverman and I would like to read some other interesting ones to possibly recommend them to my book discussion group.
Well, since Churchill was a prolific author as well as statesman, I'd say The Last Lion vols. 1 and 2 by William Manchester. Although I'm currently reading Jenkins' bio of Winston, and he has had a swipe or two at Manchester's characterizations.
David Minter's William Faulkner: His Life and Work is a good length for a book group, and can easily supplement one of Faulkner's novels. I've used excerpts to teach with and my students enjoyed having the additional perspective.
A real saga of one of the most wealthy American families, John H Davis' The Guggenheimsit is a very well written book, Davis captures the essence of old money and industry, published in '78' it's hard to find but worth the search....
I'm enjoying Charles L. Shields's biography of author Harper Lee. I wondered why he gave it the title, Mockingbird, but having re-read Lee's book now, and the intro to the bio, it's very clear.

I've read a few Fitzgerald biographies (plus Milford's Zelda). I find him fascinating.
