Anime can be great, but by and far most of it is just plain awful. The japanese know how to draw and animate but have never acquired the skill to direct or edit any of their stuff properly.
For most general adult audiences, Miyazaki's movies are very acceptable. Maybe not so much for pre-teens as these movies are not squeamish about violence and things that make up nightmares.
For the sake of humanity, we can't show kids blood.

I contend that, some are great. Anime is just another medium to tell a story, which has far excelled American animation, for television at least, imagine that, it's not just for kids. Sure there are a lot of crap but there are great ones as well, which is to say that the ratio of great ones are greater than the great ones American television has created.
Mushi-shi, Kino's Journey, Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, Mononoke (not Princess Mononoke), and look at Studio 4 C's work (most of which are superb, which has also produced a Batman short, might want to check that out. The studio gets hired across the globe, for me, hands down, the greatest 2d animation studio there is). Miyazki's work are gold, must watch.
Also, don't ever watch them dubbed, it just isn't the same. American voice actors just butcher it, I find it excruciating to sit through.
Also what I don't understand is why this thread is in the book sub-forum; Anime is just Japanese animation. Obviously the OP is rather ignorant of the topic, ergo his thumbs down. Also I understand that the people I've met who've showed contempt for anime are people who really believe in Americanism, which is to say they hate anything foreign. I rarely use the word 'hate', but that's what I mean, in the deepest sense of the word. Some of these people were actually good friends.

yes i'm ignorant on the topic because you know me so well
To be fair I liked pokemon but I never considered that anime.
That's dumb to think i hate things foreign. again, you don't even know me.
I put this in the book sub forum because their are a lot of anime books and comics. That's why.
Anime is animated movies/shorts. The books/graphic novels are called manga. The nice thing about manga is that it covers a wide range of topics, and, assuming you are willing to read graphic novels, you can usually find something to like.
As far as people obsessing over things, there are a lot of things I don't understand obsession with, such as major league sports. Massive waste of time, money and energy, IMO.
LOL, I don't get anime, either, but I am happy to see someone else who has no interest in major league sports.
Anyway, it shows pride in a city. it's a time for whole cities to celbrate and represent their city by supporting their teams.
But...it's so damn BORING to watch!
I don't think I like anime because a) I'm a reader, and not so much into picture-y things, and b) the first time I ever heard of it/ saw it was through some weirdo I dated who liked anime/cartoon pictures of women in bondage. As a matter of fact, for a long time that's all I thought anime WAS--some type of cartoon porn.
Your a girl. That's why. I think those chick flicks are stupid and ridiculous. I think doing the laundry is borrring. Soap Operas are boring and overdramatic.

lol. There are a lot of anime porns. That's also what I don't get. if you like porn, why not just watch the real thing?

"Anime books" are called manga, similarly like comics refer to the magazine/book format in the states. You even confused that too. :\
Pokemon is anime, aimed at children ...
I never said you hated things foreign, only people I've met.
If you can track it down (last I checked, the DVDs were out of print in America) I also really enjoyed 'Read or Die'. Very lyrical, and excellent animation.
I've also like a couple different of the Fullmetal Alchemist versions. Starts out as a pretty straightforward grand quest storyline, but before too long, Our Heroes come to realize that they're part of a much bigger but hidden struggle between good and evil.
