I have a Kindle app on my new smart phone. Amazon has hundreds of free books and there are other web sites with hundreds more. Never tried the local library so not sure. The screen on my phone is the perfect size for me to read - and I wear bifocals - and it is easy to use. Since it is a Kindle app, I think you would be happy with a Kindle itself, except it is bigger. Go try them out (Nook at Barnes and Noble) and see how you like the feel/weight of them. Or upgrade your phone for about the same price!
I think the Sony and the Nook work with libraries. I looked at my library and the list online. I just kept finding non-fiction available as ebooks.
I think you'd probably want to go with the Kindle or the Nook. They seem to be the most popular. I have an iPad and have the apps for both on there, but so far have only gotten books for the Kindle app (of the two anyway).
If library books are important to you, Kindle is not for you. Go with a Nook. It will also support Google ebooks which means you can support your local independent book stores: Independent Bookstores Selling Google eBooks | IndieBound
Until Kindle offer support for epub, it won't have access to library books or Google's ebooks.
My daughter bought me a Kindle WiFi (not the 3G model) for Christmas through her own Amazon account. I also have an Amazon account, and cannot register the Kindle for some reason, it won't recognize my email address. I can access my Amazon account just fine. She is out of town and won't be home until next week now and I want to register it or actually might even get the upgrade model to the 3G.
I looked at the Nook Color and really liked it because it does not have a keyboard; but it is $249 and I'd pay the difference on either the 3G Kindle or the Nook Color. But cannot at this point make a decision until I know why I can't register the one I have. (I am not a Kindle geek, obviously, it was a nice surprise gift, I never researched them.)
Any advice as to Kindle 3G vs. WiFi only, and/or Nook Color ? I don't want mine to be outdated soon which I have a feeling will happen. thanks !

It's probably registered to your daughter and she needs to deregister it. You can call/email/chat wit the Kindle help desk on Amazon and they are usually quite helpful. Although they may be a little busy right after Christmas.
