In many cases, I bet this is true. In others, not necessarily so.
Of the three Dover books I still have, two (by Eric Sloane, the artist, writer, and meteorologist) match the description of heavy, bright white coated paper, with beautifully clean illustrations. They are larger format.
The third book,
Flatland, is a classic story set in, err, mathland. I wish I’d read this as a child, because it’s far more engaging than some math classes I took!
Anyway, this third book is from Dover’s
Thrift Collection. The format is small—befitting the slim book—and the paper is yellowed, coarser fiber, and uncoated. It might have cost only a dollar at the time I bought it. But this book probably was also printed by other companies, too.
