I haven't read The Forgotten Garden, but it's on my list. Kate Morgan is the author, and her first book is on my list also, which is The House at Riverton.

ETA: Yes, she was simply abandoned. Please tell me what you thought of it when you're through. I loved The Help, and Half Broke horses also.
