Just finishing "On Beauty", Zadie Smith. Really enjoying it, a nice read by a writer who can make me laugh. Earlier I read her "White Teeth", and enjoyed it enough to try another of her books. It is rare for me to enjoy a female writer this much (I don't care how sexist you think I am, I read for pleasure.)
It is! And it's extremely well written! I'm so relieved, not only to not be disappointed but to actually admire it He catches the tone of 1889 London (I was once a big fan of London 1890-1913 and this takes me happily back); Oscar is completely Oscar, nuanced perfectly, not a a wrong note about him; the murder-mystery is moving briskly along as believable yet - more and more possibilities and twists, you know. All in a clear, relaxed, confident style. It's great fun, Im just so pleased. Thanks for asking pocono
Update: This book turned out to be a massive disappointment. The first hundred fifty pages or so were fine. But the development and resolution are not only ridiculously contrived, they're full of modern sensibility. Scene after scene pointlessly repetitive as if the author had a word count quota to meet. Probably the worst is that the "Oscar" character is nothing like Oscar at all, after all. After such a fresh, promising ramp-up, too. Oscar would beat this author up and drop the cankerworm of truth on his face. Grade D- and a great big
I just finished reading two books: The Gravedigger's Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates and Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. I usually like JCO's work, but this book really seemed disjointed, lengthy, and meandering to nowhere. Animal Vegetable Miracle was the first book I've read by Barbara Kingsolver though and I thought it was tremendously enlightening. I really think about where my food comes from now and the effect food shipping has on the global economy. I'd highly recommend it.
I know I'm a little late in the game, but I just started reading Three Cups of Tea and like it so far.
