These classics just ain't for me.

It's not just the antiquated blah blah blah that bugs me -- it's that they're all, in some way, love stories. I'm not a love story type of gal. Don't get me wrong, I'm cool with a romance that's a part of the bigger picture (aka life). But when the whole crux of the story is finding a husband or something like that? BAH! I'm just not that interested.
I find that sad, but if you're not into it, you're just not. You and I will likely not be able to swap book recs.

You might still like the Woman in White. There are people in it who do fall in love, but it's more of a mystery and not a love story.

I think that's the one that I'd like to give a shot at some point. I also, based on the synopsis, thought it might be more up my alley.

The Count of Monte Cristo, while it has a love story in it, is basically a tale of revenge. And The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a tale of lust, power, the ugly side of religion and the human condition in general. The story has nothing to do with the Disney movie. But both of those books are challenging just because they are so long.

The classics are classics because they speak to people over generations. Don't give up yet! How about The Jungle Books? Or The Call of the Wild?

I totally agree ^^^^^. He's the opposite of romantic.

At least now you can watch all the great movies and miniseries based on the classics without having your literary allegiance tested.
