Every time I log-in here, I see this thread, and have yet been able to come up with just 5, 10 or even 50 titles. There are so many good books I have read -- that have struck me as good on too many different levels to try to narrow down to five, the 'best.'
SO f-r-u-s-t-r-a-t-i-n-g. But, I'm still trying.
Wow, you have 50 favorite books? Please list some so we'll know what you like to read. I know, 5 is impossible. I've added on to my list a lot.
'eleven minutes' by Paulo Coelho
'dry' by Augusten Burroughs
'black boy' by Richard Wright
'ghetto girls' by Anthony Whyte
'the moles people: life in the tunnels beneath New York City' by Jennifer Toth

Fantastic book!
There is also a documentary film called "Dark Days" that covers the same territory - and even some of the same individuals encountered in Mole People.
1. The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
2. 1984 by Orwell
3. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson
4. The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
5. We the Living by Ayn Rand
1. Empire Falls by Richard Russo
2. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
3. I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb
4. The Green Mile by Stephen King(I love all his books, but this is my favorite)
5. For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway
I'm sure I could think of at least 20 others, but these came to mind first.
I have read so many wonderful books, it seems almost irreverant to pick just five favorites.
I must put at the top of my list: The Covenant by James Michener To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - My coming of age book. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Fountainhead by Ayn Rand The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper - My great romance book of my teen years and still a beloved story.
1. On the Road - Jack Kerouac
2. Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee - Dee Brown
3. Dharma Bums - Jack Kerouac
4. 1776 - David McCullough
5. Sand Creek - Kevin Cahill
Heavens, but I have stared and stared and stared at this thread's title, and still can't come up with the 5 Best. I've even tried to think in different terms, like the 5 books I think everyone should read, the 5 I've enjoyed the most, the 5 of the most merit, the 5 I would want to be buried with . . .
Sheesh, but this has been an impossible task for me. I do appreciate the fact you all are making me think!

Maybe try installments of five? That way, you could make one on-going list and post at least five a week.
