Card apparently made some anti-gay remarks a few years back that caused an uproar.

I find the whole idea of boycotting any book or movie or TV show or piece of music because you don't like the creator's views is silly and sad. We should read books that challenge our views. If all someone ever reads are authors who agree with them, then that person lives in a sad, shallow world.

If someone had to pass a political litmus test with me before I read their books, I'd do very little reading.

Yup. No one would be reading Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Mark Twain...heck, even Shakespeare.

I finally read this book. Can't believe that Card initially wrote this in 1977 as a short story.

I know I'm a heretic here but I first read the short in Analog magazine and the novel always seemed unnecessarily dragged out to me

I read the novel and enjoyed it, although I disliked the premise. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it seemed to be making a case for how behavior could become nature, and yet the perpetrator was never at fault.

An essay on Ender as an innocent killer was helpful in sorting out what I had the most trouble with. I'm still thinking it through. I'm interested in knowing if anyone else had similar issues, and if so, how you resolved them.

I haven't read the essay, but enjoyed the first 3 books of the series. Ender's moral concerns about having been turned into a killing machine are addressed in vol.2, Speaker for the Dead. It's been years since I read them, but I do remember thinking that Ender's Game really needs the follow-up in vol.2.
