I dont have a huge collection of books but i have a bit of a collection both hard and softcover. My HCs are wrapped in bags and carefully stored to keep the pages clean and the SCs are always read very carefully; no sweaty hands, no food or drink around, no spine creases, etc etc. However, ive noticed that when i loan a book out it really irks me when i get it back and corners are folded, comments are written in it, the spine is creased dozens of times, greasy fingerprints, and other things. I like being able to share my things but if people cant take care of them then i may stop.
Regardless, how much do you "care" for your books? Do you have any poet peeves when it comes to how others treat their or your books?

I actually do.. haha
I keep my books in good shape, and get upset with myself when it gets dirty or I accidentally spill my drinks over it.
My biggest pet peeves about how people treat their or my books is when they place it on the floorboard of the car (who knows where people's shoes have been- in the restroom with urine all over the place? horrendous).. and how they treat library books like it's public toilet paper.
I'm curious how people treat their books in other parts of the world like Japan or Singapore. I treat my books like I do my floor. Take off your shoes before coming into my house and keep my sanctuary clean.
Books were thoughtfully written by their authors. Why not take good care of what you feed your mind to?
This is a habit of mine I'm most anal about. Everything else? Whatever. Books are treasures (least the ones that speak the truth). I like to preserve what I value most~!
My books are like our home, very loved, very comfortable, very inviting and anyone is welcome to read them if they choose.
My books have been absolutely everywhere with me when I am reading them from the floor of the vehicle to the Gulf of Mexico on the beach.
No one has to take their shoes in our home either, the floors will wash, the sweeper can be run but a friend that stops by to visit is a gift that we treasure and it is always possible that visit will be the last visit with that treasured friend.
I have a few authors that I tend to loan out more than others, so I have a duplicate used-bookstore set of those books just for loaning.
I have a first edition, first print hc copy of Outlander by Gabaldon that I had been loaning until I found out exactly what that thing was worth! Fortunately the loanees had returned it to me in good condition. Whew..!
If I enjoy a book, I usually have this need to pass it on. Certain authors are keepers because I do reread a lot, but being a book pusher has been very satisfying in so many ways over the years.
My books are placed on a shelf in my closet and grouped by subject. Keeping them there they stay in great shape but I must admit they're brutal dust collectors. I hate dust.
I consume my books. I read them. I write in them. I turn down corners. I shove them in backpacks and rumple up the pages. I highlight. I annotate. I cry on them. I loan them out often to never see them again.
Books are replaceable, but my reading experience is not.
I love that everyone has a different approach to reading a book.

I feel the same way. In fact years ago I gave most of them away. I felt the experience of reading was more important than the actual physical object.
And I also want to be light in what I posses. Kind of be able to take off at a moments notice without worrying about what will happen to my things.
I must admit that I'm very protective of my books, but many of them are fine quality "collector" editions, so it would be pretty dumb of me to buy them and not take care of them. I never touch a book with wet or dirty hands. I do not eat while reading, and if I am drinking something I am careful not to drip or spill anything on the book. I don't have a problem with others reading from my collection, but I politely request that they use care when doing so. I would only lend a book to someone I really trust who I know would give it back and not mess it up. Some people will think that is being way too uptight, but I love my books and have spent a lot of time and money getting really nice ones that I can enjoy for years to come.
