It has been a long time since I have found a great science fiction book or series to read. Examples of what I mean by "great" would be Dune, Ender's Game, Hyperon, Ring World, Mote in the Eye of God, etc.

Can anyone recommend any recent titles that might satisfy?

Some of the space opera's by David Weber; "Safehold series, eric Flint's 1632 series; Brin uplift series, also Postman, Practice effect. Will also recommend The Martian. Another new book out is "One year after" which is a sequel to "One second after" SO it is not hopeless, I just do not enjoy Vampires, Magic, and outlandish fantasy.

I'll second that. It is one of the rare science fiction books I thought was terrific, and it was written after the author's service in the Vietnam War and largely concerns the thoughts he developed while serving in that conflict.

One other I'll highly recommend is The Boat of a Million Years, by Poul Anderson. The story begins in ancient Rome around the year 300 BC and concludes far across the galaxy in the distant future. Here's a worthy review:

Finally, I have to suggest the Riverworld series. Prose it is not, and certain plot elements are rote, but damn it is a lot of fun and the originality and imagination of the story are terrific. The main characters include the British explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton, Hermann Goering, Mark Twain, King John, Cyrano de Bergerac, Jack London, the Red Baron, and other historical figures. Again, a review:

Since I enjoyed all of the books mentioned by the OP, I'll suggest trying Ben Bova's book, Mars. I have not read his sequels but I truly enjoyed this book.

Have you tried any of the Greg Bear, Gregory Benford or David Brin novels? I enjoyed the Foundations they wrote for Asimov, so they might be worth trying out.

Have read most of what was suggested. But thanks..... Recently read and LOVED The Martian. Looking forward to the movie. Currently reading Tuf Voyaging. Not great but interesting since I believe that the author, George R. R. Martin, wrote himself into the books as Haviland Tuf, the main character. If Martin loves cats and does not eat meat, then my belief is correct.
