We have books 1-7 and we want to give them to our 10 year old Granddaughter. We have not read them so we are wondering if they are appropriate for young kids? Do they have a any cursing in them? Are they scary? The 10 year old loves to read and is advance for her age. Thanks.
Mrs. NBP, an elementary school librarian, says, "Yes". She mentioned that she has 2nd graders (7-8) reading Harry Potter when I asked her your question just now.
My 2 oldest were reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy at 10. They're now in their 30s.
I'm a children's librarian also and I say yes, 10 is fine to start Harry Potter. They do get darker as you go through the series, but children are generally self limiting...if it bothers them, they'll stop.
They are shelved in the Juvenile fiction section in my large county library system, Not in the Young Adult. (which is generally for middle school and up)
Absolutely. I started reading them to my daughter when she was about 6 and she took over reading them to herself when she was 8 or 9 and read them all.

They are age appropriate they start of very light & moves up in maturity with the reader. Scary? They can be at times other times not so much. Maybe you should read one yourself before you give them to your grand daughter.
It depends on the child. My one child devoured the series by seven, another ten. Ten is definitely an appropriate age to start. What a thoughtful gift!
I'm reading the first one with my 6-year-old now and she loves it.
