Audio books are slower, but one can listen to them and try to sleep. I wish i was able to sleep more.

I have the same issue as Mikala. My mind wanders if I listen to audiobooks, though it tends to do that when I read "textbooky" non-fiction as well.

I think a lot of it depends on the person reading the book though. I listened to one of James Patterson's Alex Cross books narrated by Anthony Heald whom I loved on "Boston Public" and he held my attention, though the story was also pretty suspenseful. And it's been recommended to listen to Shonda Rhimes ("Grey's Anatomy", "Private Practice" and "Scandal" creator) book "Year of Yes" as it's read by her so you get the true inflection where it's supposed to be, which I may do.

I also find my mind wandering with audiobooks. I much prefer my Kindle.

Having lived very close to the sites of the Tate-LaBianca murders when they happened, I read Helter Skelter when it first came out. I found it a bit difficult to read. If I had known and if audiobooks existed back then, I might have chosen the audiobook.

Always depends who is narrating the audio book. I Partridge, by the fictional character Alan Partridge aka Steve Coogan, is far better on audio book as you hear the character. Plus Coogan is immensely funny. The Aquariums of Pyongyang, not so much fun.

I've become a big fan of audiobooks, because I can "read" them while I'm getting dressed in the morning, doing housework, and commuting.

That said, I've listened to some great ones, and some not-so-great ones. The narrator really can make it or break it. (I've even discovered new authors purely because I sought out particular narrators.)

One thing I DON'T like is when an author uses the same narrator for everything. I do think that all books in a series should be narrated by the same voice actor, but it's jarring when the same voice actor narrates DIFFERENT series by an author.

I returned the one I had. I wasn't fond of the narration, and it's just wasn't working for me.

I got the Goldfinch. I love the concept of *reading* while I'm doing my housework, it's a win/win in theory.

I like to listen to audio books when I'm driving a long distance or working doing something very routine, like yard work. Other than that, I prefer to read. I read much, much more than I listen. I don't own any audio books- when I'm planning a trip, I go to the library and check a couple of them out.

I'd love to do a study of this, because I'm betting that people retain markedly less from audio books, versus actually reading.

I'm sure this is the case.

I like the feel of a book in my hands and I can sit for hours on end and read. However, I am enjoying audio books because I can crochet, do housework, drive, etc and listen. Audiobooks are awesome, but I still enjoy holding a book and reading it.
