Thomas Berrington is the main character—that is name of the series I think—
Some are (or were) Kindle Unlimited reads if you have that with Amazon
There is new book out soon
David Penny is the author
He has written other historical novels

Started on Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables. Very interesting so far, but a bit dark.
