Kingsolver, Pulitzer prize finalist:

The Bean Trees
Pigs in Heaven
The Poisonwood Bible
Flight Behavior
The Prodigal Son

Anne Tyler, Pulitzer prize winner:

Back When We Were Grownups
The Accidental Tourist
Celestial Navigation
A Spool of Blue Thread

Maybe read their bios and comments on goodreads...both have written many more than listed...

They both write strong, clever, poignant, funny books...Not fluff. They both know and write the human condition.

ps A Tree Grows in Brooklyn...in top twenty of my favorites

I loved both of these. And I thought that Rules of Civility (same author as A Gentleman in Moscow) was FABULOUS!

That one shook me to the core. I wish it had been a novel. That would have been bad enough. But that someone had to actually experience that? Omg.

I would pass on The Bean Trees and A Spool of Blue Thread Those two books ruined me from trying other books from those two authors.

True. It's hard to say you like/love a book when the situations are so terrifying.

Wow -- House in the Sky sounds interesting. Adding it to my cart. (My cart has almost 600 items)
I have Christadora sitting on my shelf, but I cannot remember at all what it is about or how it got on my radar. (Obviously at some point I bought it.)

Yes, Flight was not her best....

We can't all agree on every book....
Many of the other recommended ones I've never heard of...don't care for fluff either.

At least the Pulitzer prize team likes these two authors.

They are both terrific. I read Homegoing as part of a book club -- actually, I'm in two book clubs, and I think both read Homegoing. Everyone loved it. It's almost like a series of interconnected short stories, although it is a novel. Each chapter is about a different person, and every two chapters moves to a new generation. It starts out with a chapter each for two half-sisters, who do not know each other, in Africa in the late 1600s. One goes on a slave ship to America, and the other marries a white man in Africa. Then the next two chapters are about a child of each of the two sisters, then the subsequent 2 chapters are about a child of those children (i.e, the grandchildren of the two half sisters) and it goes on from there up to the present day.

Underground Railroad is also great -- I ended up reading them back to back, and it was hard to keep some things straight between the two, since they have similar themes and in part, take place in the same time period.

Heh Heh -- turns out I have House in the Sky sitting on my shelf!

Guess I'm moving that up in the TBR pile.
