I am reading The Time Traveler's Wife for the first time and it is so absorbing and well written that I'm finding it hard to do anything but read. From reviews and comments made about it in the past I wasn't sure what to expect. The time travel aspect takes a bit of "magical thinking" but, after awhile, it seems almost possible and the story and characters really take you away. It is a lush romance...and Eric Bana seems "right" to portray Henry..just enough rough edge and gorgeous looks...it's a wonderful book...don't miss it!

graceC mentions The Household Gods co-authored by Harry S. Turtledove, and I thought I'd suggest another that he wrote.

Turtledove writes what is technically called "alternate history," although it is closely related to time travel, and in fact a good many alternate histories incorporate time travel as an element of the plot. Such a one is Turtledove's The Guns of the South, which I very much enjoyed.

Synopsis: January 1864--General Robert E. Lee faces defeat. The Army of Northern Virginia is ragged and ill-equipped. Gettysburg has broken the back of the Confederacy and decimated its manpower. Then, Andries Rhoodie, a strange man with an unplaceable accent, approaches Lee with an extraordinary offer. Rhoodie demonstrates an amazing rifle: Its rate of fire is incredible, its lethal efficiency breathtaking--and Rhoodie guarantees unlimited quantitites to the Confederates. The name of the weapon is the AK-47.... That quote was from the publisher's website. I'll add to it by mentioning that Rhoodie turns out to be a time-traveler from South Africa who is unhappy with the end of apartheid and hopes to turn the tide of history in favor of continuing slavery, but I won't divulge any more details.

Turtledove has an advanced degree in history coupled with an unerring story-telling sense, and the result is a highly readable tome. It is also a good stand-alone book, unlike his other marathon sagas (Worldwar, Crosstime Traffic and several others).

Those into time travel and based on historical facts (most) need to check out Most of Barbara Erskine's novels. This woman is amazing.

Kingdom of Shadows is her best but you would also love Lady of Hay

Ummm is on a distinguished road
this is a young adult novel, and I hadn't read it since i was in middle/high school so I don't remember all the details, but I remember it was one of my favorite books at the time, and one I'd re-read (I don't usually re-read books) - The Juniper Game by Sheryl Jordan. It's time travel + ESP.

Back to back by really strange happenstance I read Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and Jeanette Winterson's Sexing The Cherry. Both less about time travel and more psycho-fantasy lit.

Time travel? Crichton's "Timeline" was decent. Jasper Fforde's stuff is kind of time travel-ish..

The first ones to come to mind for me, that haven't been mentioned here already, are all classified as children's books but have lots to offer for adult readers, too...

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Amazon.com: The Phantom Tollbooth: Norton Juster, Jules Feiffer: Books fabulous - lots of wit and word play

The Little Prince by Antoine de st Exupery Amazon.com: The Little Prince: Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Katherine Woods: Books Not "really" time travel but still, an absolutely lovely, poignant story

Alice in Wonderland & Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carol

Hope it was ok to link to a sales site?
