What science fiction books would you recommend? I've enjoyed Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. I'm currently working on Cryptonomicon. Niel Gaiman's American Gods was also fun. Of course, there's the uber-sci fi work of them all, Orwell's 1984.

Does that mean you prefer 'hard' sci/fi, as in techno stuff? Or the kind that explores different cultures and ecosystems? Or space opera/fantasy?

Any which way. American Gods is actually more of the "culture" type fantasy rather than "techno stuff". Snow Crash is a hybrid of both. What I like about sci fi is the leeway given to the author to present grand themes/big ideas....

Okay. Grand themes, big ideas.

Robin Hobbs has several series, The Farseer Trilogy, The Liveship Traders, and some others.
Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and Ann McCaffrey collaborated on several works, including the Petaybee series.
Mercedes Lackey created Valdemar, among other worlds.
Ann McCaffrey created Pern, among other worlds.
Kim Stanley Robinson created the trilogy, Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars.
Marian Zimmer Bradley created Darkover.
Elizabeth Moon wrote The Deed of Paksenarrion.
David Brin, Joe Haldeman, and scads of others.

One classic science fiction book I recommend is The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester. First book ever to win the Hugo award for best science fiction book of the year. One of the best science fiction book I ever read.

Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. One of the best I've EVER read, for a whole lot of reasons.

The Mount by Carol Emshwiller. Deeply thought-provoking and at times downright disturbing.

And almost anything by James Tiptree Jr, a/k/a Alice Sheldon.
