The first name that jumped to my mind was Vladimir Nabokov.
For non-fictionk it would have to be Thorstein Veblen.
How come nobody has said J D Salinger yet? And the enigmatic B. Traven, whoever he was.
The great pioneer writers, O E Rolvaag and Willa Cather.
Herman Melville, too.

I think I am most intrigued by the life of marjoie kinnan rawlings . I think she was ahead of her time in the fact that she got a divoce when divorce was virtually unheard of . I think she is fascinating .

Love that book. That is a good question.

Two thumbs up for Stephen King!!! I read his Stephen King On Writing...great book, too, besides his fiction.

I must also add a second current writer: J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter)

Some of these posts are OT since people started listing favorite authors instead of their lives.

Probably my favorite author is Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

My first thought was Hemingway. Then Poe. Then I was running around with Douglas Adams, Tom Robbins and then I was left with 50 or so others. How about Homer or Ovid? Shakespere perhaps?

This is a hard question because how could an author of science fiction, murder or spy novels, for example, have a life that could compete with their stories? For a fiction author's life to intrigue me, they'd probably have to write about everyday life so their own life could seem less dull in comparison.
