I was at a park in Minneapolis today and found a book on a park bench. It's not something I'd normally read, but was intrigued because it had a sticker on the front saying the book was not lost. There is something called www.bookcrossing.com where people leave books with these stickers and whoever picks them up can read them, register them and pass them along. It's pretty cool. Just thought I'd share it with you all. I think I'll clean many of my books out and leave them lying around for others...instead of either tossing them or putting them in a used book store. The name of the book is Rasputin's daughter by Robert Alexander.
I heard about that several years ago. It sounds really cool. I'd thought by now I would have at least seen ONE BOOK somewhere that was left to be passed on but have yet to. I'm glad you found one. I wish I could get my kids to part w/ their books as we may soon be having our own library.
I bought an audiotape once on sale when I was faced with a long boring car ride. It had a little card in it that explained the book crossing program. I left it on a bench by the elevator in a hospital and felt so good about passing it along. Reduce, reuse and recycle!
In the cafe I used to go to when we lived in Maryland, I found such a book, love the idea of it!!! I think it is a great idea when coffee shops have a book shelf and people can bring books... or take books!

I have been doing that unofficially for years. Every time I finish a book I don't think I will read again I leave it in a public space with a little note , hand it to someone who looks as they might enjoy it or I have also been known to hand my holiday books to local small libraries. They always seem pleased.
Bookcrossings is an excellent scheme but I have never been organised enough to join it.
Books are there to be shared and I love the idea of someone enjoying my previous literary discoveries. I have yet to find one though !
Yes, I've done it unofficially for years, especially when traveling.
I joined Bookcrossing back in 2002.
After a dear online friend died, a bunch of us "released" books in her name all over the place: Europe, United States etc.
But I haven't been involved in awhile, and should do so again.
such a great idea! thanks for sharing. I hadn't thought of this for a while, but back a few years ago when my dad was in the hospital a lot, I took books and left them in the waiting room for others.
I have never found a book anywhere, but I have left quite a few books on planes and at hotels. Some of the non-chain hotels I've visited have book cases in their lounge area with books and magazines left by guests where current guests can take to read. I thought that was awesome!
