My favorite book overall was The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, although I loved White Fang by Jack London too, which caused me to read everything I could find by him. I still love all these books!

I also loved all of the Henry Huggins books. The dog's name was Ribsy. And yes, Beezus and Ramona were friends of Henry's. I was introduced to them by my third grade teacher, Miss Chase, who used to read to the class during "quiet time" right after lunch (this was in the early 1960's).

I tried to get my own kids to read the Henry Huggins books in the 1980's, and they could not have been less interested.

I also remember loving a book called The City Under the Back Steps. It was about two children who shrink to a tiny size and are adopted by the society of ants that live under the back steps of their house. I think it's now out of print.

Other favs - Misty of Chincoteague and Black Beauty.

As a child in the 1950's I think I read almost all of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle series of books. During the summer our midwestern library had a bookmobile which made regular stops in our neighborhood with a wide selection of kid's books.I've been an avid reader ever since.

Any book by Lois Lenski. I'm going to check the children's section of the library next time I go back in a few days and see if by chance any of her books are still there. She wrote and illustrated all her books.

My absolute favorite book was "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. Awesome book! Bought it for my daughter too!
