Sad to hear British mystery icon and former champion jockey Dick Francis hurdled his last fence in the Cayman Island this week at 89.

The three-time recipient of Mystery Writers of America's Edgar for Best novel managed to weave horse-racing backgrounds with detailed non-equine pursuits to produce a rich tapestry of civilized violence.

“I inherited my brother's desk, his business, his gadgets, his enemies, his horses and his mistress. I inherited my brother's life, and it nearly killed me.” -- Dick Francis, Straight

My Christmas book list continues to shrink.

My grandma turned me on to Dick Francis.
This was years ago. I was visiting her in Nantucket and she left one of his books (Bonecrack? No, maybe Rat Race) in the guestroom for me in case I needed reading material. I was riveted.
She and Mr. Francis are both gone now, but the books and the memories are forever.

I read and enjoyed several of the Francis books. I didn't realize he was 89. I will go through the list and try to read more of his titles.
