A few years ago I read a book about a guy who was a history professor whose specialty was political assassinations. At one point in the book he was giving a lecture to his college class and said that Dr. Samuel Mudd, the guy who set John Wilkes Booth's leg, had died in prison.

Of course, Mudd died a free man. this is something you could verify in ten seconds on wikipedia. Later in the book the guy went into great detail about some medieval cult of assassins. The bit about Mudd made me wonder how accurate the other stuff was.

Even a news story for publication tomorrow morning doesn't go into print until it's been vetted by a "fact-checker". You'd think a major publishing house of best selling novels would be a little bit conscientious about things like that.

Your cemetery story reminded me of the sign on the gate of the cemetery in the little gravel-road town of Paradise, Arizona, that said "Unauthorized burials prohibited". They must have had a problem once with stiffs trying to sneak into Paradise.

...and even after the vetting they are often wrong. My former career brought me into contact with news reporters on a regular basis, usually on mundane issues and stories, sometimes serious issues. I've never seen a news report of which I had first-hand personal knowledge that was 100% correct. These experiences alone (well, nearly alone) have caused me not to accept any news story on face value alone or to assume that it has supposedly been checked, therefore it must be ok.

Your cemetery sign has a duplicate in Carrizozo, NM. (Accompanied by a "No Hunting" sign.) Over the years they have had new graves just show up...
