Hmmm...It's been a long time since I've read this one, but it would probably be Night by Elie Wiesel. It is absolutely heart-wrenching, but such an important book.

I'd have to agree--one book is not enough!

Stephen King's "The Stand". It's amazing, whether you are a SK fan or not. I have recommended this book many times, and always get a positive response from those who take my suggestion.

despite the fact that it was found out to be a scam even as a fiction i highly recommend "A million little pieces" because i loved to story, how it was written (no he said, she said, "bob said" etc), and loved how vivid the descriptions were

The book that I would recommend is The Alchemist by Paulo Cohelo. This book message is universal. Despite its childish and simple writing stile, it successfully portrays the message of following your dreams and trusting your self.
This sure illustrates the truth of - "Different strokes for different folks." There was a recent thread for the single worst book you've ever read and you just picked my nomination. I thought it was embarrassingly shallow and predictably saccarhine.

Animal Farm George Orwell. Very insightful book about politics and hypocrisy.

LONESOME DOVE by Larry McMurtry would head my list. Plus he has at least five other titles that I would have on my best 100 list.

The Good Earth Pearl S. Buck--only because I read it as a kid and it absolutely mesmerized me. And I knew then I would always read.

This actually isn't my favorite book, because it's so heart-wrenching, but "Gone with the Wind" is excellent. It's very well written, and Margaret Mitchell made sure to double and triple check her facts about the Civil War battle dates, etc. The movie can't even begin to compare to the depth and richness of the book. At 1,037 pages (hardback version), it's a long slog but well worth it.
