I remember in H.S. (late 90's) when I read a lot more, one particular book kept with me...sort of. I remember it was an epic story in that it started with one generation and continued for at least three more. The original protagonist was a church builder back in the times when churches took years to build (maybe set in the 1200's?) Probably in the time when kings and queens ruled more than not. Anyway, the builder taught his son the ways of church building and the son took over when the father passed. I don't remember a lot more than that. A few q's...

Does anyone remember what the title might have been for this book?

What would this genre be called?

If you know the genre, does anyone have any recommends on more books like this?

Thank you!

It sounds like Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett. There is a sequel called World Without End.
He's also done The Century Trilogy which is a similar format spanning generations in later centuries.

The genre is historical fiction.

Visit the thread we have going right now about historical fiction/novels.
Historical Novels, Anyone?

There's also a thread going on in the History forum.
Great Historical Fiction.

Also, if you do a search for historical fiction via the C-D search function you'll get lots of hits.

Have fun and so glad you like this genre.

I agree it sounds like "Pillars of the Earth". The third volume in the trilogy, "A Column of Fire" will be released September 12.

Just came to say Ken Follett - The Pillars of the Earth.

Now I'm delighted to hear that there is a thread of really good historical fiction novels on C-D. Thanks Movinon!

I didn't know there was one! I'm lost in Roman history right now so haven't been paying attention. I'll be ready for a change by then. Thanks so much!
