I am from Orlando and moving to Boston this December (Yes, I KNOW it will be cold... this is everyone's response). Even when I was finishing up High school I wanted to be in Boston, on bad days I look up the temperature or what new coffee place has opened up. In other words, Boston makes me happy.

I am signing a lease in a few days, I have an okay job, I am taking a year off from school and then want to apply to a graduate program in Boston. I'm only 21 and mostly this is exciting and about time. I work in operations, but my undergrad and grad planned is in Theatre. The arts are a main reason I'm thrilled to be here.

Only, I'm not really sure how to start over and, funny enough, make friends outside of the college setting. I don't want to ruin Boston for myself because I'm lonely, so... How do I meet people in Boston outside of the U setting?

Get a part time job or two at a fun place staffed with other college aged people. Volunteer work. Meetup.com

We're relocating to Boston from Florida in December also, Tampa/St. Pete area! I second Meetup.com, and if you're active, the Boston Ski and Sports Club seems like a cool way to meet other people. BSSC also has other social and travel events besides just sports.

Since your interests lie in theater, why not get involved in that scene? You probably know much more about the inner workings of theater/arts scene than I do, but there are lots of theater companies in Boston and Cambridge. At the very least you can try and volunteer with one of them. It would be a great way to meet people who have similar interests as well as as get some resume/grad school application fodder.

Boston makes smart people happy
I love Boston, been here only 6 months and regret not moving here sooner.
To meet new people, go to Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup and search for your interest groups whatever it maybe, for me it has been very effective.
Welcome to Boston and enjoy your stay.
