My hubby will be working at MIT and we want to live within 20 minutes commute time including walk and/or taking the T. Our budget for a 2-bedroom apartment is less than $2,500/mo. We have no kids and are around 40 years old so we don't want to be in the middle of undergrads and would like to live in a generally safe area. Besides a neighborhood if you know of any suitable apartment buildings let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I would try looking for an apartment around the Porter Square stop on the Red Line, in Somerville. Or even better, the Alewife station in Arlington. Arlington in general could work for you, just make sure you're on the end where your commute would still be about 20 minutes by bus.
