I have a young, female relative who will be attending an event at the Hynes Convention Center soon and staying at the Sheraton. She is considering walking by herself to places such as Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall and Harvard during the afternoon/early evening. She is not used to navigating a big city alone. While she is cautious, she has the naivete of someone her age. Is this advisable? Any advice for her? Thanks!

That area is perfectly safe. She should exercise good common sense when travelling (pay attention to her surroundings etc), but even if she doesn't she should be perfectly fine. Harvard and Quincy Market are not quite walkable from that area so she may want to consider purchasing a "T" pass and plan on taking the subway. MBTA.com will have routes and information.

Youths are indefatigable, the city is flat, and she'd probably think nothing of the roughly three-mile distance from Hynes to the downtown attractions or Harvard Square. The only cautionary notes I have to sound are: do not under any circumstances cross Boston Common after dark, and walk quickly along Tremont or Washington St's.
Kids have the ability - that life makes us older folks lose - to easily make friends. I bet she'll find plenty of adventure companions, which would make already-safe excursions even safer.

Back Bay (where Hynes is) is arguably one of the safest and most touristy parts of the city, so she should have absolutely no problem walking by herself. I agree with goyguy to avoid the Common after dark though.
