Also, coming back into boston (well newton) via the pike on monday. What times should I even attempt to come into the city?
When going through CT and on south, I always either leave super early in the morning or late at night. CT is horrible for driving through daylight hours. And that's sad since I used to love to antique there. Now, I just don't. I used to also deliver antiques into NYC. I would leave Boston around 6am and get into NYC around 10am. Now, if I had to do it again, I would leave here around 5am and keep my fingers crossed.

For a long travel south, when I have to drive through CT, I leave around 8 or 9pm at the earliest. Also, when we go to Florida, we only go down I-81 and never ever I-95. That DC beltway is the pits. And driving late at night, there is the least amount of road traffic. There are too many people on the roads these days, and most of them are horrible drivers on their cell phones.

And of course, having a Fastlane/EZPass transponder is a must, but even then it's painful going through the tolls.

For a long holiday travel weekend, leaving a day earlier or later, and coming back a day early is a good strategy. Better yet, not traveling on the holidays is the only smart thing to do.
