So, I'm heading to NY tonight after work, how late will I have to leave to avoid super heavy traffic taking the pike to 84. Normally I'd leave around 6:30, but with this being a big travelling weekend, should I leave a bit later?

Also, coming back into boston (well newton) via the pike on monday. What times should I even attempt to come into the city?

Wednesday probably would have been good! Seriously, you're up the proverbial creek, sorry to say.

Did one of those four years ago on Long Island. I feel your pain.
I know someone who makes that trek and he went on mapquest to find alternate routes that parallel 95. He did it, and it was complicated, took as much time, but he found it to be less stressful.

Sometimes the toll bar at Sturbridge is a nasty bottleneck that can back up traffic on the pike for miles. If so consider taking U.S. 20 from Auburn-- has some lights but it gets you to 84 pretty easily.

Hmmm, I've never even considered this... Do you think Route 9 to 20 all the way to 84 is an option (coming from newton)?

What would traffic be like around 6:30 or 7... Hell, I'd save a few bucks in tolls too

I know 9 is a mess during rush hour, but is it really used a a major route out of the city for normal tavelers? I dont have much experience with 20.

In terms of coming back on Monday. I made the trip on the end of a long weekend last year (though I can't remember which one). I left at noon and it took 6 hours. Consider taking the Merritt Parkway instead of 95.

Wouldn't do it. 9 is just a two-lane road through some towns and it runs through the streets of Worcester and that takes quite a while. I'd pick up 20 West at Exit 10.
