Default Parking Out of State Car Within Somerville/Boston Long-Term

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend is about to start school at Tufts in the fall and while I do not plan on moving to Boston full-time at this point, I do plan on spending up to 2 weeks at a time there, primarily in the Somerville area. During some of these trips I will have my car with me, so I was wondering what the parking situation is like in that area. I currently live in DC and there are generally enough places with limitations that are flexible enough to allow you to keep your car there as long as you'd like, assuming you move it once or twice per day.

Thanks in advanced for any help!

Somerville is slmost entirely permit-only parking. Your boyfriend can get a visitor's permit, but there are rules about how long/often it can be used, and it can only be used in a certain zone. Whether or not you get ticketed will largely depend on the neighbors and the parking situation where he lives. If it's tight, residents might not take kindly to a non-resident taking up a space.

In Somerville, almost all streets are now permit only parking. Your boyfriend should be able to get guest permits, but you can't use a guest permit for more than 2 days per week for the same car. However, you can get an extended visitor pass for up to, I believe, 3 weeks. It costs about 20 bucks. But, it's a pain because every time you come, you need to go to the parking office with proof of residency for your boyfriend (a utility bill, copy of lease, etc.) and your car registration to get the permit. If you get the permit, you still need to watch out for the street sweeping schedule and/or snow emergencies depending on what time of year it is.
