I havent really looked into Jamaica Plain. I think i need to now though. I actually just hung up with a realtor out there that also helps on rentals and she seemed great.

Do you guys think that my price is going to be tough? $2000 or less is really going to have to be where we start at for the first year.

Well, Green line goes to North Station as well. It'll be somewhat slower than orange, but iopens up a new range of possibilities to you. Newton and Brookline for example. Good area, safe and lots of amenities within walking distance or short T / bus ride. It'll be tough to find a 2 bathroom apartment in your price range, but a decent 2 br / 1 ba is a possibility.

Yes, make sure you read and understand contracts before you sign them. Novel advice! Not doing so may cause you to end up a miserable person who rants incessantly on the internet.

I'm not sure if this will help, but 6 years ago I lived in a 1200 sq ft, 2 bed, 1 bath apt in an area of JP right by the pond for $1600/month. I'm sure rates have gone up since then, but you should be able to find 2br's for under $2k.

Shockingly Gilwood has come out with something negative about Greater Boston...

JP is a good option and you should check it out.

I live in Newtonville. It's very safe and quite nice here. Not as much nightlife as one might like; it's a bit on the quiet side, but there are some restaurants and a couple of bars not too far away. We're also just a few minutes from Brighton Center, which has more nightlife going on.

Newtonville has a downtown area that's a few blocks long (Starbucks, local coffee shop, cleansers, CVS, supermarket, restaurants, Dunkin Donuts, etc.) and there are other, larger, downtown areas within a mile in 3 directions: Nonantum, West Newton, Newton Centre (Newton's a fairly large town split into 13 unofficial "villages" or neighborhoods, most of which have their own downtown area).

We're in a 2-family house a couple of blocks from the commuter rail: it's 15 mins to Back Bay station, where you can connect to the Orange Line. Rent for a 1,300 square foot apt with 2BR + office, large kitchen, formal dining room, tons of basement storage, 2 parking spaces, yard, screened porch, laundry, dishwasher, working fireplace is $1600. A bit farther south in Newton is the D branch of the Green Line. It's a bit cheaper and more frequent than the commuter rail, but it takes a bit longer to get to Boston.

We're also very close to the Mass Pike and 128, so we take day trips on the weekends in any direction pretty easily. It's a very convenient place to be. Plenty of nearby parks and some official dog parks.
