moving to Boston need help with places to live in
My wife and I are moving to Boston from New York pretty soon. I would work in the Longwood Ave area and she will commute to Quincy. We both want to drive and wanted to know what would be a few places for us to look at. We prefer to live in the suburbs. We were thinking of Newton, Needham, Jamaica Plains, Brookline, West Roxbury, but I'm not familiar enough with the commutes.......any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

newton is real nice so is roslindale, west roxbury. Centre Street is huge
and connects with J.P. Roslindale, and west roxbury. You can always get
a bus if weather is bad. Chesnut hill area is nice also.

Alot of people who work for the city live in those areas. Police, Fire, and city
workers. It will make the commute easy with a bus near-by when the snow does come. I am not so sure about this now, but to work for the city of Boston you had to live in the city.

I'd pick West Roxbury. it has a very suburban feel (but it's still a part of Boston) and the commute to either jobs wouldn't be too bad (though in some parts of West Roxbury, bus/commuter rail service is very spotty)

The word "suburb" has a different meaning in Massachusetts than in many other parts of the country. For example, Cambridge, Arlington, and Belmont are "suburbs" of Boston, but the only thing that separates them is a street: cross it and you've just entered another "suburb." Needham is further out, pricey, but nice. West Roxbury, Newton, and Brookline are all nice. Jamaica Plain and Roslindale: depends on where you live, not as safe--overall--as the others.
