I know it. I've got friends down on Boston St and the side streets, and have walked those streets at all hours and never had a problem. Use a little common sense, and you'll be fine.

I would say it's pretty safe, it's a fairly vibrant area with lots of families and young professionals sprinkled with some law enforcement officers.

My wife and I travel from South Dorchester (Ashmont) to go to 224 and the Dorchester Historical Society frequently and never feel uneasy.

Safe enough I suppose, but utterly filthy as I recall.

That spot isn't bad, and I agree that it's fairly safe. But personally, I can't stand the whole South Bay area, which is pretty much right next door. It's just a visual thing, so my own opinion shouldn't sway you. But be sure to walk around the neighborhood a bit before you decide, to make sure it has the right feel.

Right! Not so much unsafe - but so filthy even the homeless avoid it. The whole South Bay should be razed and replaced with luxury condos.

Interesting thing that the west side of Boston St. was waterfront property up until the early 1900's. The Dorchester Historical Society and the Clapp house both had back yards that sloped down to the estuary that was the South Bay. When it got filled in it became the industrial area that it is today. I agree with xsobe that it should be razed and re-imagined as a residential area connecting the South End to North Dorchester.

I strongly disagree. The two things Boston desperately needs more of are affordable rentals and grocery stores. Although I'll agree it's not much to look at, South Bay/Boston St provides both.

The last thing this is city needs is more luxury condos. Developers can't even unload the ones already build.

The Luxury Condos was an inside joke Cliff - I'm surprised you didn't get it.

Not joking about essentially flattening everything from the MassPike to north of Dudley to BMC to the Seaport. It's disgusting. they'd probably have to dig 100 feet to remove the smell from Norfolk St.

Yes luxury condos with a sensible mix of retail, business, and middle income housing. Even tall buildings. The Mayor even proposed moving city hall there to help fund it and stimulate it.

Do you realize people live in Planet Self Storage?
