Default ATTENTION: Philadelphia area transplants.

How authentic are the hoagies at Fanueil Hall's Philadelphia Steak & Hoagies?

Below Wawa, IMHO. It's at the level of your average Philly neighborhood grocery but you pay twice as much. Cheesesteaks are more passable than anything you find west of the Mississippi (one place in San Francisco told me that it has to do with ribeye fat being different out West).

migrjo, Nothing beats a Phillie Cheesestake from Philly. I recomend not even trying one here. We also call our Hogaies "SUBS" or Submarine Sandwiches. Fanual Hall has all kinds of good eateries and I find the prices there competetive. I receomend the "CHOWDAH", seafood dishes, pizza etc. Good eating friend

Well...I visited Philadelphia Steak and Hoagies and I have to say it was a bust. I ordered a Philadelphia Hoagie and got a cheesesteak sandwich. When I tried to explain to the proprietor what I was after he pointed out the Italian Hoagie on his menu board and then told me that he was out of them and that they didn't sell. Unless I misunderstood him, he does not (cannot?) sell what I call a hoagie

Don't forget grinders. Some in Mass and CT refer to them as such.

I have been to Philly and the ones you will get at Quincy Market are not as good, which comes as no surprise.

TAM 88, I forgot about the "Grinder" TY. The Quincy Market is still one of the better deals for a decent meal at a decent price. I had a part time job years ago at a place called "Brick Oven Pizza" in Hyde Park (Boston) and was known to make a decent Grinder. YUM

The next time you are down in Phillie, go to your favorite steak and cheese place and watch closely how they make it. And ask them what kind of beef cut they use in theirs. Then just make your own when you get back to Boston. I think that you will be disappointed with a steak and cheese hoagie from any place other than what you find down in Philadelphia. Important factors are what kind of steak used, the type of cheese and even the sub roll.

Honestly, I've been to Phillie and your style steak and cheese subs aren't to my taste. I just don't like Cheez Whiz style cheese. When I go to my favorite Greek grinder shop, what I like to order is a steak sub on a toasted sub roll with double provolone cheese melted on top. And in addition, I also like to add some raw onions, tomatoes, sliced raw green peppers and shredded lettuce. Without any veggies on top, a steak and cheese sub just seems too dense to me.

What's your favorite place in Phillie for a steak and cheese hoagie? And do you prefer Cheez Whiz or provolone on it? You may be able to just google up a good recipe. Here's one recipe from Pat's King of Steaks.

Its good but most places in Fanuial Hall are overpriced because its a more touristy area of Town, kind of like having a bite to eat around Independance Hall

That's a very good point. The rent is really high in Fanueil Hall.

I've never had a good cheesesteak outside of the Mid-Atlantic area. Then again, I also wouldn't recommend eating the pizza here, but to each their own.
